## Meaning

BAU stands for "business as usual": the normal, everyday work of a team, as opposed to special projects or emergencies.

Teams use BAU to separate routine work (support tickets, maintenance, small fixes) from project work (a new feature or a migration): "About 30% of our sprint goes to BAU." It can also mean "things are normal again": "The incident is fixed and we are back to BAU." It is common in the UK, Australia and India, and less common in the US.

## When you hear it

Your manager says: "Once the migration is done, this becomes BAU for the support team."

## Examples

- **in sprint planning:** "We have three project tickets and the usual BAU work this sprint."
- **after an incident:** "The fix is live and everything is back to BAU."
- **in a handover:** "After launch, monitoring this service becomes BAU for the ops team."

## What native speakers say

- "That's BAU for us now."
- "We're back to BAU after the outage."
- "We keep 20% of capacity for BAU work."

## Common mistakes

- ✗ "We are doing a BAU." → ✓ "We are doing BAU work." (BAU is not countable. Say "BAU work" or "BAU tasks".)
- ✗ "Back to the BAU." → ✓ "Back to BAU." (No article: "back to BAU" or "back to business as usual".)
- ✗ "BAU (to a US team that does not use it)" → ✓ "routine work / normal operations" (In US teams, "routine work" or "keep-the-lights-on work" may be clearer.)

## Be careful

Some US colleagues may not know BAU. Say "routine work" if you are not sure.
