## Meaning

Disaster recovery (DR) is the plan and tools a company uses to get its systems and data back after a major failure, such as a data center outage, cyberattack or deleted database.

Disaster recovery (DR) is the plan and the process for getting systems and data back after a major failure: a whole cloud region going down, ransomware, or someone deleting a production database. It covers people, steps, infrastructure and testing, not only copies of data. Two numbers define a DR plan. RTO (Recovery Time Objective) is how long you can be down. RPO (Recovery Point Objective) is how much data you can afford to lose, measured in time. "RTO one hour, RPO five minutes" means you must be back within an hour and lose no more than five minutes of data. DR is not the same as backup. A backup is a copy of data. DR is everything needed to run again, including restoring that copy and switching traffic. It is also not the same as high availability (HA). HA uses redundancy to avoid downtime in the first place, and DR is what you do when HA is not enough. Phrases you will hear: "invoke the DR plan", "fail over to the secondary region", "run a DR drill", "restore from backup". Say the letters "D-R" in conversation. In messages to customers, "major outage" usually sounds calmer than "disaster".

## When you hear it

During an incident, the on-call engineer activates the disaster recovery plan to restore service within the agreed RTO.

## Examples

- **in a planning meeting:** "Our RTO is one hour and our RPO is five minutes, so we need to replicate the database to a second region."
- **in an incident call:** "The primary region is down, so I'm invoking the DR plan and failing over to eu-west."
- **in an audit:** "We run a disaster recovery test twice a year and keep the results for the auditors."
- **in a design review:** "Backups alone aren't a DR plan if nobody has ever tested restoring them."

## What native speakers say

- "We need to test our disaster recovery plan quarterly."
- "The disaster recovery process took three hours to complete."
- "Our disaster recovery strategy includes multi-region redundancy."

## Common mistakes

- ✗ "We need to disaster recovery the system immediately." → ✓ "We need to activate the disaster recovery plan immediately." (Disaster recovery is a noun phrase describing a plan or process, not a verb. You activate, execute, or implement a disaster recovery plan.)
- ✗ "Our disaster recovery is just daily backups." → ✓ "Our disaster recovery plan includes daily backups, redundant servers, and tested failover procedures." (Disaster recovery is broader than backups alone. It encompasses strategy, infrastructure, procedures, and testing.)
- ✗ "We will disaster recovery if something goes wrong." → ✓ "We will follow our disaster recovery procedures if something goes wrong." (Do not use disaster recovery as a verb. Instead, say 'follow the disaster recovery procedures' or 'activate the disaster recovery plan.')

## Be careful

Do not use as a verb (avoid saying 'to disaster recovery'). It is a noun phrase. Also, do not confuse with 'backup' — disaster recovery is the entire plan and process, not just data backup.

## Word forms

| Part of speech | Word | Example |
| --- | --- | --- |
| noun | disaster recovery | Implementing a robust disaster recovery strategy is essential for any production system. |
| adjective | disaster recovery (used attributively) | The disaster recovery team was called in to manage the outage. |

## Collocations

- **disaster recovery plan**: The most common phrase. Refers to the documented strategy and procedures for recovery.
- **disaster recovery drill**: A test or simulation of the disaster recovery plan to ensure it works correctly.
- **disaster recovery site**: A secondary facility where systems can be restored if the primary location fails.
- **disaster recovery testing**: Regular validation of disaster recovery procedures to identify gaps or issues.
- **activate disaster recovery**: To put the disaster recovery plan into action during an actual incident.
- **disaster recovery RTO**: Recovery Time Objective — the maximum acceptable downtime before systems must be restored.

## Synonyms

- **business continuity**: Broader term that includes disaster recovery but also covers operational resilience and contingency planning.
- **failover**: A specific mechanism within disaster recovery that automatically switches to backup systems.
- **incident recovery**: Sometimes used interchangeably, though disaster recovery is more formal and structured.

## Opposites

- system failure
- data loss
- downtime

## FAQ

### What do RTO and RPO mean in disaster recovery?

RTO (recovery time objective) is how fast systems must be back. RPO (recovery point objective) is how much data you can afford to lose, measured in time. “RPO of 15 minutes” means at most 15 minutes of data loss.

### What is the difference between backup and disaster recovery?

A backup is a copy of data. Disaster recovery is the full plan to restore service: backups, standby systems, runbooks, and regular tests that prove it works.

### What does disaster recovery mean in IT?

Disaster recovery is the plan and process for restoring systems and data after a major failure, such as a region outage, a cyberattack or accidental deletion, so the business can keep running.

### What is the difference between RTO and RPO?

RTO is how long you can be down before it becomes unacceptable. RPO is how much data, measured in time, you can afford to lose. RTO of 1 hour and RPO of 5 minutes means you recover within an hour and lose at most 5 minutes of data.

### What is the difference between disaster recovery and backup?

A backup is a copy of your data. Disaster recovery is the full plan to get systems running again: restoring data, rebuilding infrastructure, switching traffic and communicating. A backup is one part of DR.

### What is the difference between disaster recovery and high availability?

High availability prevents downtime with redundancy, for example several servers behind a load balancer. Disaster recovery restores service after a failure that high availability could not absorb, such as losing a whole region.

### What is a DR drill?

A DR drill is a planned test where the team practices the recovery plan, for example by failing over to a backup region. It shows whether the documented steps really work before a real disaster.

### How do I talk about disaster recovery in English at work?

Useful phrases are invoke the DR plan, fail over to the secondary region, restore from backup and run a DR drill. With customers, say major outage instead of disaster.
