## Meaning

ETA stands for "estimated time of arrival". At work it means when you expect something to be ready or finished.

ETA comes from travel ("the flight's ETA is 6pm"), but in tech teams it is used for anything that will be done in the future: a fix, a feature, a report, or a person joining a call. "What's the ETA on the hotfix?" means "When do you think the hotfix will be ready?" An ETA is a guess, not a promise, so people often add "rough ETA" or update it later.

## When you hear it

A customer-facing bug is open, and your manager asks in Slack when the fix will be live.

## Examples

- **in Slack:** "@Maya any ETA on the release notes? Marketing wants to post them today."
- **in an incident channel:** "Root cause found. ETA for the fix in production: 30 minutes."
- **joining a call late:** "Running five minutes late, ETA 10:05."

## What native speakers say

- "What's the ETA on the fix?"
- "Rough ETA is end of day tomorrow."
- "No ETA yet, I'll update you by 3pm."

## Common mistakes

- ✗ "When is the ETA of the fix?" → ✓ "What's the ETA on the fix? / When will the fix be ready?" (ETA already means "when", so ask "What's the ETA?", not "When is the ETA?")
- ✗ "The ETA is guaranteed for Friday." → ✓ "Our ETA is Friday, but it may move if testing finds issues." (An ETA is an estimate. Don't present it as a promise.)
- ✗ "ETA: soon." → ✓ "ETA: Thursday afternoon." (An ETA should be a time or date. "Soon" doesn't help anyone plan.)

## Be careful

An ETA is a guess. If it changes, update people early instead of missing it quietly.
