## Meaning

FYI stands for "for your information". It tells someone you are sharing something useful, and usually that no action is needed.

FYI is one of the most common workplace abbreviations. People put it at the start of a message ("FYI, the office is closed Monday"), in email subject lines ("FYI: new expense policy") or when forwarding something. It usually means "just so you know, you don't need to do anything". Be careful with tone: "FYI, I already did that" can sound annoyed.

## When you hear it

You hear that a big client meeting has moved, and you want to let your teammate know without asking them to do anything.

## Examples

- **in Slack:** "FYI the staging database will be down from 6 to 7pm for maintenance."
- **in an email subject:** "FYI: updated travel policy from January"
- **forwarding an email:** "FYI, below is the customer's feedback from yesterday's demo."

## What native speakers say

- "FYI, the client call moved to 3pm."
- "Just FYI, I'm out tomorrow afternoon."
- "Forwarding this FYI, no action needed."

## Common mistakes

- ✗ "For your FYI, the meeting moved." → ✓ "FYI, the meeting moved." ("For your" is already inside FYI. Don't repeat it.)
- ✗ "FYI, please fix this by tomorrow." → ✓ "Could you please fix this by tomorrow?" (FYI means no action is needed. If you need something, ask directly.)
- ✗ "FYI, I told you this last week." → ✓ "Just a reminder, we discussed this last week." (FYI plus a complaint sounds passive-aggressive. Use a softer phrase.)

## Be careful

FYI is fine almost everywhere, but "FYI" followed by a correction can sound passive-aggressive.
