## Meaning

Multimodal refers to systems or models that process and understand multiple types of data inputs simultaneously, such as text, images, audio, and video together. In AI and machine learning, it means combining different data modalities to improve performance.

A multimodal AI model can work with more than one type of data, called a modality, such as text, images, audio and video. For example, you can send a photo and ask a question about it, or give a spoken instruction and get a written answer. Earlier models handled one modality, such as text only. Multimodal models connect them in one system, so they can describe a screenshot, read a chart, transcribe speech or answer questions about a document. Product teams use them for support tools, search, accessibility and document processing. Words that go with it are multimodal model, multimodal input and multimodal prompt. A modality is a type of input. A product is not multimodal just because it accepts file uploads. The model itself has to process those types.

## When you hear it

Our new chatbot needs to be multimodal to handle both text and voice inputs from users.

## Examples

- **in a product meeting:** "A multimodal model lets users upload a screenshot of the error instead of typing it."
- **in an AI team standup:** "I'm testing whether the multimodal model can read the charts in our PDFs."
- **in an architecture review:** "The assistant accepts text and images, so we need a multimodal model, not a text-only one."
- **in a research discussion:** "Evaluating multimodal models is hard because errors can come from the vision part or the language part."

## What native speakers say

- "We need a multimodal approach to this problem"
- "The model is multimodal, so it can process images and text"
- "Building multimodal systems requires careful data alignment"

## Common mistakes

- ✗ "Our app is multimodal because it works on phones and desktops." → ✓ "Our app is multi-platform because it works on phones and desktops." (Multimodal refers to data types, not platforms. Use multi-platform for different device types.)
- ✗ "The system is multimodal since we distribute it through multiple channels." → ✓ "The system is multi-channel since we distribute it through multiple channels." (Multimodal is about processing different data modalities, not distribution methods.)
- ✗ "We made the interface multimodal." → ✓ "We made the interface support multiple input modes or We created a multimodal system." (Multimodal typically describes data processing capabilities, not interfaces themselves.)

## Be careful

Often confused with 'multi-platform' or 'multi-channel'. Multimodal specifically refers to handling multiple types of input/output data (text, image, audio, video) simultaneously, not just multiple platforms or distribution channels.

## Word forms

| Part of speech | Word | Example |
| --- | --- | --- |
| adjective | multimodal | The multimodal AI model processes text and images together. |
| noun | multimodality | The multimodality of our system allows it to handle diverse inputs. |

## Collocations

- **multimodal model**: The most common phrase, referring to machine learning models that process multiple data types
- **multimodal system**: Used to describe software architectures capable of handling multiple input/output types
- **multimodal learning**: Refers to training approaches that use multiple data modalities simultaneously
- **multimodal AI**: Artificial intelligence systems designed to process different types of data together
- **multimodal approach**: A strategy that combines multiple data types or methods to solve problems

## Synonyms

- **multi-input**: Slightly broader, refers to accepting multiple inputs but not necessarily fusing them
- **cross-modal**: Emphasizes interaction between different modes rather than simultaneous processing
- **fusion-based**: More technical term emphasizing the combining of different data types

## Opposites

- unimodal
- single-modality

## FAQ

### What does multimodal mean in AI?

A multimodal AI model can take in and sometimes produce more than one type of data, such as text, images, audio and video, in the same system.

### What is the difference between multimodal and unimodal?

A unimodal model handles one type of data, such as text only. A multimodal model connects several types, so it can, for example, answer a question about an image.

### What are modalities?

A modality is a type of data or input channel, such as text, speech, images, video or sensor readings.

### What are common uses of multimodal models?

Describing images, reading charts and documents, transcribing and summarizing audio, helping users search with a photo, and making assistants easier to use for people with different needs.

### Is multimodal only used in AI?

No. It can also mean using several types of transport, such as truck and rail, or several ways of learning. In tech it almost always means AI models that use several data types.

### How do you pronounce multimodal?

MUL-tee-MOH-dul. The stress is on the first and third syllables, with the main stress on MOH.
