## Meaning

PTO stands for "paid time off": days you are away from work and still get paid, such as vacation or personal days.

PTO is the US workplace word for paid leave. Instead of separate buckets for vacation, sick days and personal days, many companies give one PTO balance that you can use for any reason. People say "I am on PTO next week", "I have three days of PTO left" or "Please submit your PTO request in the HR tool." In the UK and India, people more often say "annual leave" or just "leave", but international tech companies use PTO everywhere.

## When you hear it

Your manager asks whether you have any PTO planned before the release next month.

## Examples

- **in Slack:** "Heads-up: I'm on PTO Friday, so please ping Priya about the deploy."
- **in a one-on-one:** "I'd like to take a week of PTO in August. Is that OK for the roadmap?"
- **in an email signature:** "Out on PTO until 3 June, with limited access to email."

## What native speakers say

- "I'm on PTO next Monday and Tuesday."
- "I'd like to take two days of PTO in March."
- "I'll be back from PTO on the 14th."

## Common mistakes

- ✗ "I will take a PTO tomorrow." → ✓ "I will take PTO tomorrow. / I will take a day of PTO tomorrow." (PTO is uncountable, like "time". Say "a day of PTO", not "a PTO".)
- ✗ "I am in PTO this week." → ✓ "I am on PTO this week." (Use "on PTO", like "on vacation" or "on leave".)
- ✗ "Can I PTO on Friday?" → ✓ "Can I take PTO on Friday?" (PTO is a noun, not a verb. Use it with take, have, use or request.)

## Be careful

PTO is mainly US. With UK or Indian colleagues, "annual leave" or "leave" may sound more natural.

## Word forms

| Part of speech | Word | Example |
| --- | --- | --- |
| full form | paid time off | Our policy gives 25 days of paid time off. |
| noun phrase | PTO request | I submitted a PTO request for the 20th. |
