## Meaning

At work, to punt on something means to delay a decision or task, or push it to someone else, usually because it is not a priority now.

"Let's punt on the dark mode until next quarter" means "let's not deal with it now". The word comes from American football, where a team kicks the ball away when they cannot score. It can be neutral (a smart choice to delay) or slightly negative ("he just punted the problem to another team"). In British English, "punt" can also mean a small bet or a flat boat, which is unrelated.

## When you hear it

In sprint planning, your tech lead says: "We'll punt on the caching work for now."

## Examples

- **in sprint planning:** "We're over capacity, so let's punt on the export feature."
- **in a design review:** "We can punt on multi-region support; nobody needs it this year."
- **negative meaning:** "They punted the bug to us instead of fixing it themselves."

## What native speakers say

- "Let's punt on that until next sprint."
- "Can we punt this to the platform team?"
- "I'd punt on the redesign for now."

## Common mistakes

- ✗ "Let's punt the decision on." → ✓ "Let's punt on the decision." (Use "punt on" + the topic.)
- ✗ "Punt it! (in a formal client email)" → ✓ "We suggest deferring this to phase 2." (Punt is informal. In formal writing, use defer or postpone.)
- ✗ "We punted the feature. (meaning we finished it)" → ✓ "We shipped the feature." (Punt means delay or pass it away, never complete it.)

## Be careful

Punt is casual and American. In formal writing or with non-US teams, use defer or postpone.

## Word forms
