## Meaning

A queue is a line of items waiting to be processed in order, usually first in, first out (FIFO). In software, message queues like RabbitMQ, SQS or Kafka hold jobs until a worker handles them.

A queue is a line where items wait their turn. The usual rule is first in, first out (FIFO): the first item added is the first one taken out. In software, a queue holds tasks, messages or requests until something is ready to process them. Teams use queues (for example RabbitMQ or Amazon SQS) so systems are not overloaded and parts can work separately. A web server can put an email job on a queue and reply to the user at once, while a worker sends the email later. If the queue keeps growing, work is arriving faster than it is processed. Queue is also a verb and an everyday word: "queue up a job", "the build is in the queue", "the support queue". Related words are enqueue (add), dequeue (remove) and backlog (the waiting work). In British English a queue is also a line of people, while American English says line. Say it like the letter Q.

## When you hear it

We need to queue these background jobs so they are processed in the order they were submitted.

## Examples

- **in an incident call:** "The queue depth is climbing, so the workers can't keep up with incoming orders."
- **in a design review:** "We will put the email job on a queue so the API can respond immediately."
- **in a standup:** "My build has been in the queue for twenty minutes."
- **in a support meeting:** "Can we look at the oldest tickets in the support queue first?"

## What native speakers say

- "Add to the queue"
- "Process the queue"
- "Queue up a task"
- "Clear the queue"
- "Queue management"

## Common mistakes

- ✗ "We queued all users waiting for the website." → ✓ "All users are waiting in line for the website." (Queue as a data structure is not used for physical lines of people in tech contexts. Use it for data or tasks only.)
- ✗ "The queue will process items randomly." → ✓ "The queue will process items in FIFO order." (A queue by definition processes items in the order they were added, not randomly. If you need random access, use a different data structure.)
- ✗ "I queued the message but it processed immediately." → ✓ "I added the message to the queue, but it processed immediately because the queue was empty." (Queuing does not guarantee a delay; if the queue is empty, processing may happen right away.)

## Be careful

Non-native speakers sometimes confuse queue (data structure) with queue (waiting line). In tech, it almost always means the data structure unless discussing customer support or ticketing systems.

## Word forms

| Part of speech | Word | Example |
| --- | --- | --- |
| noun | queue | The message queue stores items waiting for processing. |
| verb | queue | We queue the request and process it asynchronously. |
| verb (past) | queued | The task was queued yesterday and processed this morning. |
| noun | queuing | Queuing theory helps us optimize system performance. |

## Collocations

- **message queue**: A queue used specifically for passing messages between services or systems
- **priority queue**: A queue where items are processed based on priority rather than strict FIFO order
- **queue length**: The number of items currently waiting in a queue
- **enqueue**: To add an item to a queue
- **dequeue**: To remove an item from a queue
- **queue up**: To add something to a waiting list or schedule

## Synonyms

- **buffer**: A temporary storage area; less formal but similar concept in some contexts
- **backlog**: Items waiting to be processed; used in project management and product development contexts
- **stack**: Similar data structure but uses LIFO order instead of FIFO

## Opposites

- stack
- immediate execution

## FAQ

### What is a queue in programming?

A data structure where you add items at the back and remove them from the front, like people waiting in line. The first item in is the first item out.

### What are message queue technologies?

Tools that pass messages between services so they do not have to wait for each other. Common examples are RabbitMQ, Amazon SQS, Apache Kafka and Google Pub/Sub.

### What does FIFO mean?

FIFO means first in, first out. The first item that enters the queue is the first item that leaves it.

### What is the difference between a queue and a stack?

A queue is first in, first out, like a line of people. A stack is last in, first out, like a pile of plates, where you take the top one first.

### What is a message queue used for?

It holds messages between parts of a system so they do not have to work at the same speed. One part adds work, another processes it later, which smooths traffic spikes and makes systems more reliable.

### What does queue depth mean?

Queue depth is the number of items waiting. If it keeps growing, work is arriving faster than it is processed, and you may need more workers.

### How do you pronounce queue, and is it line in American English?

Queue sounds like the letter Q. British English also uses queue for a line of people, while American English usually says line. In software, both use queue.
