## Meaning

A short daily meeting where team members briefly share what they did yesterday, what they plan to do today, and any problems blocking them. It typically lasts 10–15 minutes.

Standups are a core ritual in Agile teams. The name comes from people traditionally standing during the meeting to keep it short and focused. It is not a status report for managers, but a way for the team to sync and unblock each other quickly. Some teams do standups in person, others remote via video call or Slack.

## When you hear it

Used in Agile/Scrum teams, typically held in the morning. Everyone joins, either in a meeting room or video call. Common in startups and modern software companies.

## Examples

- **Standup:** "Yesterday I fixed the login bug, today I'm starting the password reset feature. Blocked on API docs from the backend team."
- **Slack:** "Can we move standup 15 minutes earlier tomorrow? I have a client call at 10."
- **Standup:** "I finished code review on three PRs. Today I will work on the database optimization ticket. No blockers."
- **Jira:** "Mentioned in standup that we need to revisit the deployment pipeline. Let's create a story for that."
- **Standup:** "We're waiting on the design mockups before we can start the UI refactor. Can someone follow up with design?"
- **Slack:** "Quick reminder: standup moved to 9 AM because of the all-hands meeting today."
- **Interview:** "In our team, we do a 15-minute standup every morning to keep everyone aligned and surface blockers early."

## What native speakers say

- "Let's jump into standup"
- "Quick standup sync at 10?"
- "I will keep this short for standup"
- "See you at daily standup"
- "Anything blocking you in standup today?"
- "Standup is at 9:30 AM sharp"

## Common mistakes

- ✗ "I will attend the standup meeting tomorrow." → ✓ "I will join standup tomorrow. / See you at standup tomorrow." (Engineers say "join standup" or just "standup", not "standup meeting". It is redundant.)
- ✗ "In standup, I reported about my progress." → ✓ "In standup, I shared what I did yesterday and what I'm working on today." (Standup is not a formal "progress report". Use simpler language: "what I did", "what I am doing", "blockers".)
- ✗ "Standup should be 30 minutes long so we can discuss everything." → ✓ "Standup should be 10–15 minutes. Detailed discussions happen in separate meetings." (Standup is meant to be quick. Long discussions defeat the purpose. That is why it is called a "standup".)

## FAQ

### How long should a standup last?

Usually 10–15 minutes. If it goes longer, people are discussing too much. Save detailed conversations for after standup.

### What if I have nothing to say in standup?

That is fine. You can say "I finished my task yesterday and I am waiting for the next task" or "No updates today, no blockers."

### Do I have to attend standup every day?

Yes, usually. It is important for team alignment. If you cannot make it, tell your manager or team lead. Async updates exist for remote teams across time zones.

### Is standup a place to blame people for delays?

No. Standup is for the team to help each other. If someone is blocked, the team should offer help, not blame.

### What is the difference between standup and sprint review?

Standup is a short daily sync about current progress and blockers. Sprint review is a formal meeting at the end of a sprint to show finished work to stakeholders.

### Can we skip standup if the team is working well?

Some teams reduce frequency, but most do daily standup. It helps catch problems early and keeps the team on the same page.
