## Meaning

TBD stands for "to be decided" (or "to be determined"): something is not decided yet and will be confirmed later.

TBD fills a gap in plans, tickets and invitations: "Launch date: TBD", "Owner: TBD". It tells the reader the information is missing on purpose, not by mistake. Good teams pair a TBD with when or how it will be decided: "Date TBD after the design review." Related forms are TBC ("to be confirmed": we have an answer but need to confirm it) and TBA ("to be announced": decided but not shared yet).

## When you hear it

The project plan says "Release date: TBD" and a stakeholder asks you what that means.

## Examples

- **in a project plan:** "Phase 2 start date: TBD, pending budget approval."
- **in a ticket:** "Assignee is TBD until we finish sprint planning."
- **in a meeting invite:** "Agenda TBD; I'll share it by Wednesday."

## What native speakers say

- "The launch date is still TBD."
- "Owner: TBD, we'll assign it in planning."
- "Location TBD, probably the big meeting room."

## Common mistakes

- ✗ "The date is TBD later." → ✓ "The date is TBD. / The date will be decided later." ("TBD" already includes "later".)
- ✗ "Release: TBD (for weeks, with no plan)" → ✓ "Release: TBD, decision after the 12 May review." (A TBD with no next step looks like nobody owns it. Say when it will be decided.)
- ✗ "TBD (when you already know but need confirmation)" → ✓ "TBC" (Use TBC (to be confirmed) when you have a likely answer that still needs checking.)

## Be careful

A TBD with no owner or date can look like a forgotten task. Add "decision by..." when you can.
