stress test

In simple English

In tech companies, a stress test is a critical part of quality assurance and performance engineering. Engineers run stress tests to verify that a system can handle maximum expected load, unexpected spikes in traffic, or resource constraints. This is especially important before major releases or for systems that must stay online continuously, such as payment platforms, social media servers, or e-commerce sites during peak shopping periods. Stress tests go beyond normal testing. While regular tests check if a system works correctly under normal conditions, stress tests deliberately overload the system. Engineers monitor what happens: Does it slow down gracefully? Does it crash? Are there memory leaks? By identifying weak points early, teams can fix issues before they affect real users. The results of a stress test inform decisions about infrastructure scaling, code optimization, and deployment timelines. If a stress test reveals that a system can only handle half the expected traffic, the team knows they must either optimize the code, upgrade servers, or delay the launch.

Understand what stress testing means, why teams do it, and how to use the term correctly in tech discussions.

Let us run a stress test on the database.
The system failed the stress test.
We need to stress test this before launch.

Real examples

in a standup

"Yesterday we ran a stress test on the API and found it crashes after 10,000 concurrent requests."

in a code review

"Have you stress tested this function with large datasets? The loop might have performance issues."

in a team meeting

"The infrastructure team will conduct a stress test next week to verify we can handle Black Friday traffic."

Don't say this

Handle with care. Do not confuse with testing for mental stress on users. Stress test refers to system performance under extreme load, not user experience stress.

We stress tested our users to see if they liked the new design.
We tested our new design with users to gather feedback.Stress test refers to system load testing, not testing users. Do not use it for user experience or user testing.
The stress test was very stressful for the team.
Running the stress test revealed several critical issues the team needed to fix.Stress test is a technical term about system load, not about emotional stress on people.
We will stress test the documentation.
We will review the documentation thoroughly.Stress test applies to systems and code performance, not to documents or non-technical deliverables.
