mob programming

Mob programming is an extension of pair programming that brings together a larger group—typically 3 to 10 developers—to work synchronously on a single task. One person drives (writes the code) while others navigate (suggest what to type) and think about strategy. The driver and navigator roles rotate frequently, often every 15-30 minutes. In tech companies, mob programming is used when tackling high-risk features, complex architectural decisions, or critical bugs where collective expertise and knowledge-sharing are valuable. It is especially common in Agile teams and companies that prioritize code quality and team learning. While it requires all participants present at once, many teams find it reduces bugs, speeds up delivery for tricky problems, and improves team cohesion and knowledge transfer. Mob programming differs from pair programming in scale and from traditional code reviews in that it is real-time and collaborative rather than asynchronous feedback. Some teams use it for the entire sprint, while others apply it selectively to high-priority or high-complexity work.
