In tech workplaces, context switching happens constantly and is often viewed negatively because it reduces productivity and increases errors. When you context switch, your brain needs time to reload all the details, priorities, and mental frameworks related to the new task, which wastes cognitive energy. For example, if you are writing code and then suddenly need to attend an urgent meeting about a different project, you have context switched. This term is used both literally (in CPU and operating system discussions) and figuratively (in team communication about workload and focus). Engineers often complain about frequent context switching because it fragments their day and makes deep work difficult.
