In tech companies, on-call is a rotation system where engineers are assigned responsibility for production systems during specific time periods, often nights, weekends, or holidays. When you are on-call, you must be reachable and ready to respond to critical issues, system failures, or alerts within minutes. This is especially common for DevOps, site reliability engineers (SREs), and backend teams. Being on-call is part of the job in many tech roles and usually comes with compensation such as overtime pay or time off in return.
