session

In simple English

In software engineering, sessions are fundamental to how web applications work. When a user logs into a website or app, the system creates a session—a unique identifier that tracks that user throughout their time on the platform. This allows the system to remember who the user is, what they have done, and personalize their experience. Sessions expire after a period of inactivity for security reasons. Beyond user interactions, developers use the term to describe dedicated work periods. For example, a debugging session is when engineers sit down specifically to find and fix bugs, a code review session is when team members review code together, and a training session is when new concepts are taught. The term appears frequently in standups, sprint planning, and technical documentation.

"Make sure to invalidate the user session when they click the logout button."

in a team meeting

"We need to schedule a design session to discuss the new API architecture."

Don't say this

Handle with care. Session can mean different things in different contexts (user session vs. debugging session). Non-native speakers sometimes confuse it with 'meeting' or use it when they mean 'section' or 'period'. Session is not interchangeable with 'class' or 'lesson' in tech contexts.

We have a session next Tuesday to discuss the project.
We have a meeting next Tuesday to discuss the project. In casual workplace contexts, use meeting for scheduled gatherings. Session is more specific to technical work blocks or user interactions with software.
Each student got a session of training material.
Each student got a session of hands-on training.Session works better when describing an active period of work or learning, not passive material delivery.
The session stores data in the database permanently.
The session stores data temporarily in memory.Sessions are typically temporary by design; for permanent storage, use persistent storage or database terminology.
