SSL

In simple English

SSL creates an encrypted connection between a user's browser and a website's server, preventing hackers from intercepting sensitive data. When you see a padlock icon in your browser address bar, that indicates an SSL certificate is in use. In modern tech environments, TLS has replaced SSL as the standard protocol, but teams still commonly refer to both as SSL in everyday conversation. SSL certificates must be installed on web servers and renewed periodically to maintain security compliance and user trust.

Handle with care. SSL is often confused with TLS (its modern replacement). While SSL is technically outdated, the term is still widely used in conversation to refer to both SSL and TLS protocols interchangeably.

✓The data is encrypted with SSL.— SSL cannot be used as a past participle verb. Use proper phrasing like 'encrypted with SSL' instead.
✕We upgraded to SSL last year.
✓We upgraded to TLS last year.— SSL is deprecated; if upgrading, you upgrade to TLS. However, saying SSL still works colloquially for both.
