SSR

In simple English

In Server-Side Rendering, when a user requests a web page, the server processes the request, generates the complete HTML content, and sends the finished page to the browser. This means the user receives a fully rendered page immediately, rather than receiving a blank page that loads content progressively in JavaScript. SSR is commonly used in frameworks like Next.js, Nuxt, and traditional backend frameworks to improve initial page load performance, SEO, and user experience. It is especially valuable for applications that need fast first contentful paint or strong search engine optimization, though it increases server workload compared to Client-Side Rendering (CSR) approaches.

Real examples

in a standup

"We are moving the product listing page to SSR to boost our search rankings."

in a code review

"The team decided to use SSR with Next.js to handle the dynamic homepage."

in a team meeting

"Our mobile users are seeing faster page loads since we switched to SSR."

Don't say this

Handle with care. SSR can refer to Server-Side Rendering or Server-Side Request. Context matters. Do not confuse with CSS or CSR (Client-Side Rendering).

SSR makes everything faster because it runs on the server.
SSR improves initial load time and SEO, but increases server load.SSR trades server resources for better first-page experience; it is not universally faster for all scenarios.
We use SSR to replace our entire frontend.
We use SSR to pre-render the initial HTML on the server.SSR is a rendering strategy, not a complete frontend replacement; you still need frontend code.
SSR and CSR do the same thing.
SSR renders on the server; CSR renders in the browser. These are opposite approaches with different trade-offs in performance and complexity.
