beta

In software development, beta is a critical phase between the internal development phase (alpha) and the final release (production or general availability). During beta, real users outside the company test the software in real-world conditions to identify bugs, usability issues, and performance problems that internal testing may have missed. Companies use beta releases to gather user feedback, validate market demand, and ensure the product is stable enough for public launch. The term is used both as a noun (noun form: 'We launched our beta yesterday') and as a modifier (adjective form: 'Our beta version is available now'). Teams talk about 'going into beta,' 'being in beta,' or 'exiting beta' to describe the product lifecycle stages. Public betas are open to anyone; closed betas are limited to selected users. Beta testers are often tech-savvy users willing to tolerate bugs in exchange for early access. In modern usage, particularly with cloud and web applications, products may stay in beta for months or even years, blurring the line between beta and production releases.

Handle with care. Do not confuse beta (a testing phase) with the Greek letter beta. Also avoid saying 'we are betaing' — the correct verb form is 'we are beta testing' or 'we are in beta.'
