feature freeze

In simple English

A feature freeze is a critical milestone in software release planning. It signals that the product roadmap for the current version is complete and the development team must now shift focus from building new functionality to refining, testing, and fixing what exists. This typically happens a few weeks before the official release date. During a feature freeze, developers and product managers stop accepting requests for new features. Any new ideas or requirements are typically deferred to the next release cycle. The freeze allows QA teams to thoroughly test the existing features without worrying that the codebase will change underneath them. It is different from a code freeze, which comes later and prevents almost all code changes, including bug fixes in some cases. In agile and traditional environments alike, announcing a feature freeze is a standard way to communicate release readiness and manage stakeholder expectations about what will and will not ship.
