OpenAI Raises $11 Billion, Valued at $1.25 Trillion

Highlight any word to see what it means and translate it.

OpenAI has raised $11 billion in a new funding round that values the company at $1.25 trillion.

According to reports from Bloomberg on Friday, the $11 billion represents money received so far in an ongoing round. The full round has not closed yet and is expected to finish in the coming weeks.

When the round closes, it could total around $20 billion. This figure is much lower than what OpenAI was targeting earlier.

In late September, OpenAI had been looking to raise approximately $30 billion. The current progress shows the company is raising significantly less than planned.

The news affects the wider AI market. Anthropic, OpenAI's main competitor, is also raising money but facing lower valuations from investors.

Some potential buyers of Anthropic shares believe the company is worth around $1.1 trillion. This is far below the $2 trillion valuation that investors were expecting just a month ago.

OpenAI previously said it would go public in 2024 but changed those plans. Industry observers now expect an IPO to happen sometime in 2025.

Market conditions have become uncertain. Political changes and public concerns about data centers have created worry among investors about future regulatory challenges in the AI sector.

  1. 1.How does OpenAI's situation compare to funding rounds you may have heard about in your own company or industry?

  3. 3.If you worked for OpenAI or Anthropic, how would these funding developments affect your confidence in the company's future?
  4. 4.Why might political changes and concerns about data centers make investors nervous about the AI industry's future?
  5. 5.When companies delay going public, what questions do you think they should answer before making that decision?

Exercise 4

Further discussion

Have a discussion based on the following questions.

  1. 1.How do you think the AI sector will develop if funding becomes harder to obtain and valuations continue to fall?
  2. 2.What role should government regulation play in how companies like OpenAI and Anthropic operate and raise money?
  3. 3.How might competition between major AI companies change if their access to funding becomes more limited than it was in previous years?
