Airbnb announces AI travel agent coming in first half of 2027

Highlight any word to see what it means and translate it.

Airbnb announced on Thursday that it will launch its own AI travel agent in the first half of 2027.

Airbnb has talked about building this AI tool before, but now it has given a date and more details about how it will work. The company shared this news in its Q3 shareholder letter.

CEO Brian Chesky explained why Airbnb is not using a regular chatbot. He said that 80% of travelers enjoy spending time researching and planning their trips.

This means people want to look at photos, compare homes, and make decisions with family and friends.

Chesky also said that general AI agents like other companies build are good for simple tasks like making restaurant reservations or scheduling appointments. But travel planning is different because it is about dreams and exploration.

Instead of just answering text messages like a chatbot, Airbnb's agent will show travelers photos, maps, calendars, comparisons, and itineraries. The interface will change depending on what the traveler asks for.

Airbnb said the new tool will help travelers beyond just booking homes. It will help change reservations, solve payment problems, and provide 24-hour safety support during trips.

The company believes it can build this better than outside companies because of its 20 years of experience. Airbnb knows how both guests and hosts use its platform.

Airbnb also reported strong financial results. Its revenue grew 19% to 4.87 billion dollars in Q3, which surprised investors in a good way.

Chesky said this was the fastest revenue growth in more than three years.

Discussion

Have a discussion based on the following questions.

  1. 1.Does your company use AI chatbots? Do you think they work well, or do you need something different for your job?
  2. 2.Chesky believes people enjoy planning trips, so the AI should help them explore. What tasks do your users actually enjoy, and which do they just want to finish quickly?
  3. 3.Airbnb says it can build a better AI agent because it has 20 years of customer data. What advantages do you have with your company's data or experience?
  4. 4.Would you use an AI agent that shows you lots of options with photos and maps, or do you prefer typing questions in a chat? Why?
  5. 5.The agent will not just book travel but also help with problems during the trip. What other jobs could your company's AI help with?

Exercise 4

Further discussion

Have a discussion based on the following questions.

  1. 1.How is building AI for one specific job (like travel planning) different from building a general AI that does everything? What are the advantages and disadvantages?
  2. 2.Airbnb believes the visual interface (photos, maps, calendars) is better than just text chat. What does this teach us about how people actually like to receive information?
  3. 3.Many companies are trying to build their own AI tools. What makes some companies better at this than others? Is it money, data, knowledge, or something else?
  4. 4.In the future, do you think companies will use general AI agents for everything, or will most companies build their own AI tools for their specific business? Why?
