backlog refinement

In simple English

Backlog refinement, also called backlog grooming, is a scheduled meeting where product owners, developers, and stakeholders work together to ensure backlog items are well-defined, estimated, and prioritized. During this process, the team examines user stories, acceptance criteria, and technical requirements to eliminate ambiguity and ensure developers can start work immediately when items enter a sprint. This activity typically happens one or two weeks before the actual sprint planning meeting and helps reduce blockers and rework during development. In most Agile teams, backlog refinement is a continuous, ongoing activity that ensures the top of the backlog is always ready for the next sprint.

Understand what backlog refinement is, when it happens, and why it matters in Agile software development.
