In tech companies, infrastructure refers to all the foundational systems that support applications and services. This includes servers (physical or cloud-based), networking equipment, storage systems, databases, security systems, and the teams that manage them. Infrastructure is often discussed in terms of scalability, reliability, and cost. Infrastructure engineers and DevOps teams build and maintain these systems to ensure applications run smoothly. When a company talks about 'improving infrastructure,' they mean upgrading servers, adding redundancy, improving network speed, or migrating to cloud services. Infrastructure can be on-premises (in company data centers) or cloud-based (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud). You will hear infrastructure discussed in meetings about system design, deployment, scaling, and reliability. It is distinct from application code—infrastructure is the platform that runs the code.
