UAT

In simple English

UAT is a critical stage in the software development lifecycle that happens after developer testing and QA testing are complete. During UAT, real business users or clients test the application in a production-like environment to confirm it solves their actual problems and meets agreed-upon requirements. This is different from QA testing, which focuses on finding bugs and technical issues. In UAT, users run real-world scenarios and workflows to validate that the software works as they expect. If significant issues are found during UAT, the release may be delayed. UAT is essential because it bridges the gap between what developers built and what users actually need.

Handle with care. Do not confuse UAT with QA or testing. UAT is specifically end-user testing, not developer or QA testing. Also, do not use UAT as a verb casually; it requires proper context.

✓The developers completed testing; now the users are doing UAT.— UAT is performed by end-users and business stakeholders, not developers. Developers do unit testing or integration testing.
✕We will UAT the entire system next sprint.
✓We will enter UAT phase next sprint.— While UAT can be used as a verb, it is more natural to say 'enter UAT phase' or 'conduct UAT' rather than simply 'UAT' as a bare verb.
✕UAT is the same as QA testing.
✓UAT is different from QA testing; QA focuses on bugs, while UAT validates business requirements.— These are distinct testing phases with different goals and participants.
